How to Use the Template

  1. Copy the template to your Drive. Open the Google Sheets link and click File > Make a copy. For Excel, click File > Download > Microsoft Excel (.xlsx).
  2. Log every trade within 60 seconds of closing it. Not at the end of the day. Context and emotional state fade fast.
  3. Let the formulas work. P&L, R multiple, and summary metrics calculate automatically. Do not overwrite formula cells.
  4. Review the summary tab every Sunday. Spend 15 minutes checking win rate by setup, best/worst times, and profit factor. Make one adjustment per week.

When to Upgrade

Start with this template. Once you consistently take 3+ trades per day and manual entry feels like a bottleneck, dedicated software eliminates it entirely. Frequently Asked Questions

Is this trading journal template really free?

Yes. The Google Sheets template is 100% free. Enter your email to get the download link. There are no hidden costs, trials, or upsells. The template is yours to keep and customize.

Does this template work with Excel?

Yes. After opening the Google Sheets version, click File > Download > Microsoft Excel (.xlsx) to get an Excel copy. All formulas and formatting carry over. You can also use it in Google Sheets directly from any browser.

What markets does this template support?

The template works for stocks, options, futures, forex, and crypto. The 15 core columns cover any market. For options, you can add columns for Strike Price, Expiration, and Greeks. For futures, add Contract Size and Tick Value.

When should I upgrade from a spreadsheet to journal software?

Upgrade when manual entry becomes a bottleneck: typically when you take more than 5 trades per day. Software auto-imports trades from your broker, generates 50+ analytics reports, and offers features like trade replay and backtesting that spreadsheets cannot replicate.

How many fields should a trading journal track?

Start with 15 fields: Date, Time, Ticker, Direction, Setup Type, Entry Price, Exit Price, Position Size, Stop Loss, Take Profit, P&L ($), P&L (%), R Multiple, Emotional State, and Notes. Fewer than 12 and you miss patterns. More than 20 and you will stop filling it in after two weeks.
