Our 5-Step Review Process
We don't publish reviews based on marketing materials or surface-level impressions. Every platform we cover goes through the same rigorous process, from initial research to hands-on testing.
1Trustpilot & User Sentiment
We start by analyzing the platform's Trustpilot rating and reading through user reviews. This gives us a baseline understanding of what real users love and what frustrates them. We look at overall rating, review volume, recent trends, and common complaints.
2Website & Marketing Audit
We review the platform's website for transparency. Is pricing clearly listed? Are features accurately described? Are there hidden fees or misleading claims? We also check for things like a public roadmap, responsive support channels, and clear documentation.
3Feature Audit
We create a comprehensive inventory of every feature the platform offers, organized by category. This includes broker integrations, trade import methods, reporting tools, journaling capabilities, backtesting, and more. We compare this against what competitors offer at similar price points.
4Hands-On Testing
This is the most important step. We sign up, connect a broker (or import trades manually), and use the platform as a real trader would. We test the core workflows: importing trades, tagging strategies, reviewing performance reports, and using any advanced features like backtesting or trade replay.
5Write-Up & Scoring
We compile everything into a review that covers what the platform does well, where it falls short, and who it's best suited for. Every platform is scored across 8 categories on a 1-5 scale.
Our 8 Scoring Categories
Each category is scored from 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent). The overall score is the average of all 8 categories, rounded to one decimal place.
How Often We Update
Trading journal platforms evolve. Features get added, pricing changes, and new competitors enter the market. We revisit our reviews on a quarterly basis, or sooner if a platform makes a significant change (new pricing tier, major feature launch, acquisition, etc.).
Every review page includes a "Last Updated" date so you always know how current the information is.
Editorial Disclaimer
All ratings and opinions on TradingJournal.com are editorial opinions based on our research and testing. Different traders have different needs — a platform that scores a 4.8 overall might not be the best fit for everyone. We encourage you to use our reviews as a starting point, then try the platforms yourself before committing.
We are not affiliated with any trading journal company, and we do not accept payment for reviews. For more details, see our Disclosure page.
